Planning Your Move Across The Country

If you’re making a move across Canada, you’re probably already stressed, and I do not need to remind you of the hundreds of things that can go wrong in the process. Luckily, there are ways you can make this big move easier for you. Here are some tips on how to plan your move across the country.

Get An Early Start

It’s no wonder that most people find moving stressful when they leave everything to the last minute. Before they know it, they’re trying to get everything done the week before flying out. If you want to have a (relatively) stress-free moving experience, you should start creating a plan well in advance.

Start looking into moving companies a couple of months before, and as soon as you know for sure that you’re moving, start gathering the supplies you need. You can also start packing items that you won’t use or need until after the move. The sooner you start packing, the easier the process will be for you.

Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

Remember that cookbook you bought that you’ve never opened? How about the clothes you had since college that no longer fit? Like most people, you’re bound to find things you forgot you even had during the packing process. If these items no longer serve you or never did, it’s time to get rid of them!

You can give them away to friends and family or have a yard sale (read our post on how to get rid of stuff before you move!). You can also sell them at a consignment store or donate them. The point is to downsize and minimize the amount of stuff you’re moving.

Put A Label On It

A significant advantage of starting packing early is organization. Make sure to label all your boxes and write down everything inside, so you don’t have to dig through ten boxes to find what you’re looking for. This will take extra time, but trust me; it’s well worth it.

Separate The Essentials

The first few days after moving is hectic enough, so save yourself the trouble of rummaging through multiple boxes while getting ready every morning. Pack a week’s worth of essential items to get you through the initial phases of unpacking. Some things you might want to add are:

  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Sheets
Create An Unpacking Plan

If possible, take the time to plan out furniture placements and storage in your new home so that you can direct the movers where to place your furniture and boxes. This is where your labelling efforts will come in handy!
